There was no telephone service between Herm Island and Guernsey until a radio telephone link was established on 30 September 1949. Mr Jefferies established a pigeon service for which this stamp was designed by Captain W.E.Birch. Special pigeongrams were issued to record the address and message and these were rolled up and placed in a red bakelite tube which was attached to the pigeonís leg. The stamp was printed in typography by Waterlow & Sons in sheets of 8 stamps.
